Discovery of Truth

After great discussion over the Eight Values of Free expression, my peer, Danielle, and I both agree that John Miltons Discovery of Truth, or Market place of Ideas was the most important value of free expression. The concept is associated with the idea of free speech. John Milton's argument was against having a license to publish or print. If Americans were required to have a license to print or publish, every article we read, or website we visited would read exactly the same, due to only one kind of person having the ability to write or publish. The six clauses of the first amendment are supported by this idea of marketplace of ideas because it allows all citizens to speak and express themselves freely. If its through writing a blog online, or going to a religious event, its connected to the big idea of Milton's Discovery of Truth. Even this simple blog post is a product of Marketplace of Ideas.

In today's society, social media has become increasingly popular. Everyone, including individuals, schools, and companies use social media as a platform to express opinions and generate discussion. Twitter is a popular social media that can also be used as a discussion board, or news site. With the idea of Marketplace of Ideas, people can share their opinions by creating their own, or commenting on others posts. Personally, I believe that this is a fantastic way to learn about others opinions or help form your own. Without hearing all angles of a subject or topic, there is no way to fully understand it. All social media a way to connect with people who have similar beliefs to your own. While their are issues with hate speech online, everyone should be able to share their point of view on all subject matter.

There are many criticisms of Milton and his ideas. Many say that the "marketplace of ideas" has failed due to hate speech. The first amendment is a large portion of what America is built upon, and its saddening that people choose to disrespect the privileges that we have by using hate speech such as racist and abusive language. Milton's vision for this idea was positive, and that everyone could print, publish, and speak their mind. Unfortunately, it has generated an assumption that because we are free to say what we want, it is always okay. My hope for the future is that all citizens of America are able to gather and discuss, publish, and print important issues with views from all sides, minus the bashing or hatred towards the opposing side.
