Face Mask or Black Face?

Image
Two students from the University of Oklahoma are under investigation for the snapchat video that has now been blasted all over other social medias, of themselves using a face mask as blackface. The two female students were using a black, charcoal face mask to treat their acne and skin, but it turned into something else. After wiping the mask all over their faces, the girls recoded themselves using the "N word" and pretending that they were black. The friend who was recording the girl said "Stop! You've got too much. That's paint not a face mask." They claimed that the black coloring on their skin made them "feel like a nigger". This video has gone viral and gotten incredibly negative feed back from the University of Oklahoma, other students at the University, and from people online. The University felt as if they needed to take action, so the girls sorority, Delta Delta Delta, or Tri Delta, expelled them from the chapter. The sorority called th...

How Laws Are Made

Image
In my Media Law and Literacy class, we watched a 25 minute video, separated into two parts on the Supreme Court, and how laws are created. The video included basic information on how laws are are made, and also included interviews with Supreme Court Justices. The current Justices have over 200 years of experience that they are able to use as a resource in making the right decisions when voting on future laws in America. All of the Justices respect each other, and shake hands before sitting down with one another. Though they sometimes disagree on the future of our country, they share a common ground of wanting to create better laws for America. It is a huge honor to be appointed by a President to serve on the Supreme Court. It is the job of the current or upcoming President to appoint, or nominate a new person to serve on the court if their is an opening due to one member retiring or leaving the seat. There have been over 100 Supreme Court Justices in American History serving the aver...

The World Record Egg's Important Message

Image
On January 4, 2019 an anonymous account posted an image of an egg with a white background asking to become the most like picture on Instagram. Somehow, this egg image took over instagram and has now over 50 million likes, beating out Kylie Jenner who's most liked picture has only 18 million likes. The @world_record_egg account has 10 million followers. This account has become so popular, its worth around $280,00 in US money. A few days after the first initial post, the egg account posted another image of its-self, but this time with a crack in the top of its shell. This post made followers begin to question if the egg was going to reveal its identity of who was behind the account. The account had responded to many comments about who they were, but each time with a different answer. The egg account continued to post pictures with more and more cracks leading up to the Super Bowl. The final post was an almost completely broken egg, but had the stitchings of a football along the s...

Are our phones listening to us?

Image
You may have noticed, but within the past few years people have started to discover they are getting advertisements for the things they search for online. If I was googling a certain pair of shoes, or maybe a new clothing website I would always get sidebar advertisements for those items or sites. I never found this "creepy" or "scary" until recently. Now it seems that every-time I search for anything I am getting advertisements or pop ups on my social media, internet browsers, and even game and photo editing apps. To take it a step further, the things I am talking or texting about also seem to find their way onto my social media feed. Last week, I purchased a new brand of face wash. I had never talked or texted about it, but it was on my counter near where I lay my phone. The next day I got an advertisement on my instagram for this brand of face wash. That really spooked me. Is even my camera recording when I don't know it? Many questions are being asked by th...

Shane Dawson's Conspiracies

Image
Shane Dawson, a very popular YouTube star has recently began a YouTube series on his channel investigating many conspiracies that are trending on social media and in the news. I was completely shocked at the conspiracies brought up in this video. There have only been two videos released thus far and each are about 90 minutes long. Shane exposes mysteries about the California wild fires, Disney's Frozen, subliminal messages in children's TV shows, the FaceTime hack, and Chucky Cheese's pizza. All of these conspiracies were disturbing in different ways. The most shocking, and interesting conspiracy that Shane mentioned is about the movie Frozen. It's a myth that when Walt Disney passed away, his head was frozen somewhere that only a few people know about. While this may not be true, many people are interested in finding out about it. Shane introduced the idea that they created the movie Frozen so that when the words "Disney" and "Frozen" were sear...
